Teaching self-defense is a calling for me. It is my way of fighting back against the violence I have experienced in my life and the stories I have heard from loved ones, friends and thousands of women I talked to during the years I volunteered as a counselor at a sexual violence hotline.

I started training martial arts 30 years ago as a means of self-protection. I am a third-degree black belt in the Indonesian art of Pukulan and I have taught self-defense to women and children for 20 years. What I love most about martial arts are the simple, practical, life-saving skills I have learned. I love sharing those skills in a short workshop format that is accessible to everyone. Each workshop is an act of resistance and hope for a more peaceful future.

My partner of 38 years, my grown children, and a goofy standard poodle keep me grounded, inspired and entertained. I love spending time with them, or just walking around and exploring our city. And, now that the world is feeling slightly more normal, I am looking forward to the wonderful adventure of traveling to new places near and far.
